Birdathons
Supporting Bird Safe Philly
In honor of World Migratory Bird Day on May 9th, two Birdathon Teams, the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club's, Raven Luna Chicks, and the Liberty Bird Alliance's, Swifts, will each be undertaking a 24-hour bird quest to raise awareness and funds to support the conservation work of Bird Safe Philly.
About Birdathons
Birdathons are a friendly competition where birding teams attempt to identify as many different bird species as possible in a 24-hour period. There are two Birdathon Teams raising funds to support Bird Safe Philly. The Liberty Bird Alliance’s SWIFTS team is participating in the Greater Philadelphia Area Birdathon, and the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club’s RAVEN LUNACHICKS is competing in the New Jersey Audubon World Series of Birding.
Both teams seek individuals willing to make a financial contribution to support their effort on behalf of Bird Safe Philly! You can select a team to sponsor OR contribute to both teams!

World Migratory Bird Day
Every Bird Counts - Your Observations Matter
In 2026, World Migratory Bird Day will be celebrated on May 9 in the spring and October 10 in the fall. The conservation theme this year is “Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter.” It highlights the role of public participation in collecting data on migratory bird populations and their habitats and factors that impact their populations and contribute to our knowledge about how to protect them.
Community science, ranging from backyard bird counts to large-scale coordinated surveys/schemes, provide information on species distribution, abundance trends, migration timing, and breeding success. This data is important to identify conservation priorities and inform effective conservation action plans and strategies.
By engaging individuals and communities in monitoring efforts, we not only gather scientific data but also build a deeper connection to nature, raise awareness about the challenges migratory birds face, and inspire direct conservation action.
